However, in consequence to pearl ring the increase in demand, Japan's naturally occurring pearl oysters, suffered greatly from over exploitation.Enter a man by the name of Mikimoto Kokichi. From an early age Kokichi, the son of a noodle seller, had been fascinated by China's ancient techniques of pearl cultivation. This archaic technique consisted of freshwater pearl ring placing a fragment of shell within an oyster to produce an imperfectly shaped pearl; these pearls were often used as offerings at temple shrines. This basic seeding technique formed the foundation of Mikimoto Kokichi's quest to create a perfect spherical cultured pearl, which could match Japan's naturally occurring pearls so in demand by the western world. In July of 1893, after many years of trial and error, Mikimoto Kokichi managed to produce perfectly formed hemispherical (half round) Mabe pearls. Mikimoto cultured these Mabe pearls by using a hemispheric dome-shaped nucleus and placing it against the oyster's shell. Mikimoto then went into large scale farming of these Mabe pearls, journeying to Europe to akoya pearl ring sell and network markets for his new product. Around the same time two Japanese men, Tokishi Nishikawa and Tatsuhei Mise, returned from Australia where they had learnt a new grafting technique from the British marine biologist William Saville-Kent. Kent's technique involved the placing of a small shell nucleus into the mantle tissue of shell pearl a donor oyster, this was then grafted into another oyster, this foreign body would cause the oyster to form a pearl sack, producing nacre, covering the nucleus and thus producing a spherical pearl similar to those that occurred naturally. Although this technique, patented as the 'Mise-Nishikawa' method in 1908, had proved itself to be successful, it only became a viable business venture when in 1916 Mikimoto Kokichi took over the patent to produce round pearls. This ground-breaking procedure marked the beginnings of Japan's pearl industry, and by 1935 Japan was producing more than 10,000,000 cultured pearls every year. Mikimoto didn't stop there; he advanced his experiments from producing cultivated Akoya pearls using the Akoya (Pinctada fucata) oyster to cultivating the silver lipped and black lipped pearl oysters. Aside from the farming itself, the major problem facing Mikimoto Kokichi was the eradication of the negative connotation that cultivated pearls had when compared to their naturally occurring cousins. He succeeded in changing peoples perceptions by his steadfast traveling and marketing of his products at expositions and then establishing Mikimoto stores in London, Paris, New York, Shanghai, and Bombay. These stores were his showcases, offering up the latest designs and sophisticated fashions, and at the highest quality possible affordable to people aside from nobility and the higher echelons of society. single strand necklacePosted on 10/21/2009 at 3:17 PM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - LinkHOME::Shopping-and-Product-Reviews/Jewelry-DiamondsX History of South Sea Pearl Cultivation - William Saville-Kent By David-John Turner Platinum Quality Author David-John Turner David-John Turner Level: Platinum I work within the jewelry trade, and have done so for single strand necklace the past seven years. South Sea pearls had been sourced from the silver-lipped and gold-lipped, 'Pinctada Maxima' oyster of twisted pearl necklace Australia's waters since the dawn of time. For thousands of years, Aboriginal fishermen had dove for these naturally occurring South Sea pearl oysters using their meat, shell and pearls for trade and tribute. Unfortunately, as with all things precious, by the late 1800s the modern world had all but depleted Australia's natural South Sea pearl resource. However, off the north-eastern coast of Australia, a method was being unearthed that would not only revitalize Australia's South Sea pearl industry but pearl production the world-over. The British marine biologist, William Saville-Kent, served two posts as Australia's Commissioner of Fisheries, one in Queensland and one in Western Australia. In 1891, while on Queensland's Thursday Island, Saville-Kent experimented with grafting one oyster's mantle tissue, inserted with a nucleus of multi-strand necklaces shell, into another oyster's mantle. This caused the formation of a pearl sack which produced nacre covering the nucleus to form a spherical pearl. Pioneering the technique, William Saville-Kent, acting as scientist and Commissioner freely passed the method onto other interested parties working in Australia's north-eastern pearl industry. At that time, Australia's pearl industry comprised of tens of thousands of tin cup necklace people, including Aboriginal Australians, Europeans, Chinese, Malaysian and Japanese; amongst who were Tatsuhei Mise and Tokishi Nishikawa. It should be noted that many cultivated pearl industry texts on the web wrongly credit the Japanese entrepreneurs Tatsuhei Mise, Tokishi Nishikawa and Mikimoto Kokichi, with the invention of the nucleated cultivation technique. To this day, William Saville-Kent is not officially recognized as the father of this procedure and the resulting cultivated round pearl. In 1907, both Mise and Nishikawa applied for the patent of Saville-Kent's method, but realizing that they were now competing against each other they unified to patent and name it the 'Mise-Nishikawa' method. That same year, quite probably in search of sponsorship, Nishikawa wrote to opera or rope necklace Mikimoto Kokichi telling him of his discovery; "...I have found the cause of Japanese pearl formation, i.e. the reason why and how the pearl is produced in the tissue of the oyster..." (G.F Kunz: 'The Book of the Pearl' 1908). In 1916, Mikimoto and Nishikawa joined forces and went into large scale production using Saville-Kent's original technique, using it to cultivate the Akoya 'Pinctada Fucata' pearl oyster. The implementation of this ground-breaking procedure marked the beginnings of a boom in Japan's pearl industry. By 1935 Japan was producing more than 10,000,000 cultured pearls every year. But concerns ran deep over whether the largely untested government would be able to deliver. Hatoyama has vowed to cut government waste, rein in the national bureaucracy and restart the economy by putting a freeze on planned tax hikes, removing tolls on highways and focusing policies on consumers, not big business. He has also pledged to improve inflatable bouncers Tokyo's often bumpy ties with its Asian neighbors and forge a foreign policy that is more independent from Washington. "I am excited by the prospect of changing history," Hatoyama said. "The battle starts now." The new prime minister said he wanted to build a "relationship of trust" with President Barack Obama by exchanging views "frankly." Parliament convened in a special session to formally select Hatoyama, whose Democrats won a landslide in parliamentary elections last month to take control of the body's lower house, ousting Prime swing machines Minister Taro Aso's Liberal Democratic Party, which is conservative and staunchly pro-U.S. In Wednesday's parliamentary vote to choose the prime minister, Hatoyama won 327 of the 480 votes in the lower house. He needed a simple majority of 241 votes. Quickly after his electionPosted on 9/19/2009 at 5:22 AM - 0 Comments - Post Comment - LinkQuickly after his election, Hatoyama named Katsuya Okada as his foreign minister and Hirohisa Fujii as his finance minister. Though Okada has never held a Cabinet post, Fujii was finance minister under a coalition government in 1993-94, the only time in its 55-year history that the Liberal Democrats had previously been ousted from power. He was also a former bureaucrat in the pearl jewelry Ministry of Finance - suggesting that the new government won't be too confrontational with Japan's powerful ministries. It's good news that Hatoyama picked Fujii as finance minister," Watanabe said. "He's experienced. Fujii knows macro-economic policy." Hatoyama, who has a Ph.D from Stanford University and is the grandson of a conservative prime minister, had a limited pool of seasoned politicians to choose from. His party, created a decade ago, has never held power, and nearly half of the Democrats' members of the lower house pearl necklace will be serving in their first terms in parliament. The inexperienced new government was bound to make some missteps, analysts said. "This is a big change. But with change often comes with uncertainty. Beginners usually have some troubles," said Tsuneo Watanabe, a senior fellow at the Tokyo Foundation, a think tank. Hatoyama and his party, a mix of defectors pearl earrings from the conservative party and social progressives, face huge tasks that they must deal with quickly. Although it has recently shown some signs of improvement, Japan's economy remains deeply shaken by the global financial crisis and unemployment is at a record high of 5.7 percent. The rapid aging of its population also threatens to be a drag on public coffers as the number of taxpayers decreases and pension responsibilities swell. |
