The summer sun was low in the western sky as he slowed down the rental car and lowered the

Shenandoah mountains, twilight descending, prelude to darknessAnd it was the darkness that
Jason Bourne craved; it was his friend and ally, the blackness in which he moved swiftly, with sure
feet and alert hands and arms that served as sensors against all the impediments of natureThe
jungles had welcomed him in the past, knowing that although he was an intruder he respected them
and used them as a part of himHe did not fear the jungles, he embraced them, for they protected
him and allowed him passage to accomplish whatever his objective was; he was at one with the
jungles?as he would have to be with the dense woods that flanked the estate of General Norman
Swayne
The main house was set back no less than the distance of two football fields from the country
roadA stockade fence separated the entrance on the right from the exit on the left, both with iron
gates, fronting a deep drive that was basically an elongated U-turnImmediately bordering each
opening was a profusion of tall trees and shrubbery that was in itself a natural extension of the
stockade black gucci bag fence both left and rightAll that was missing were guardhouses at each point of entry and
exit
His mind floated back to China, to Beijing and the wild bird sanctuary where he had trapped a
killer posing as Jason BourneThere had been a guardhouse then and a series of armed patrols in
the dense forest and a madman, a butcher who controlled an army of killers, foremost among
them the false Jason BourneHe had penetrated that deadly sanctuary, crippled a small fleet of
trucks and automobiles by plunging the blade of his knife into every tire, then proceeded to take out
each patrol in the Jing Shan forest until he found the torch-lit clearing that held a swaggering
maniac and his brigade of fanaticsCould he do it all today? wondered Bourne as he drove slowly
past Swayne?s property for the third time, his eyes absorbing everything he could seeFive years
later, thirteen years after Paris? He tried to evaluate the realityHe was not the younger man that he
had been in Paris, nor the more mature man in Hong Kong, Macao and Beijing; he was now fifty
and he felt it, every year of itHe would not dwell on itThere was too much else to think about,
and the twenty-eight acres of General Norman Swayne?s property were not the forest primeval of
the Jing Shan sanctuary
However, as he had done on the primitive outskirts of Beijing, he drove the chanel clearance car off the country
road deep into a mass of tall grass and foliageHe climbed out and proceeded to cover the vehicle
with bent and broken branchesThe rapidly descending darkness would complete the camouflage,
and with the darkness he would go to workHe had changed his clothes in the men?s room at the
gas station: black trousers below a black long-sleeved, skintight pullover; and black thick-soled
sneakers with heavy treadThese were his working apparelThe items he spread on the ground
were his equipment, the shopping he had done after leaving GeorgetownThey included a longbladed
hunting knife whose scabbard he threaded into his belt; a dual-chambered CO2 pistol,
encased in a nylon shoulder holster, that silently shot immobilizing darts into attacking animals,
such as pit bulls; two flares designed to assist stranded drivers in broken-down cars to attract or
deter other motorists; a pair of small Zeiss Ikon 8x10 binoculars attached to his trousers by a
Velcro strip; a penlight; raw-hide laces; and finally, pocket-sized wire cutters in case there was a
metal fenceAlong with the automatic supplied by the Central Intelligence Agency, the gear was
either lashed to his belt or concealed in his clothingThe darkness came and Jason Bourne walked
into the woods
The white sheet of ocean spray burst up from the coral reef and tiffany toggle necklace appeared suspended, the dark
blue waters of the Caribbean serving as a backdropIt was that hour of early evening, a long

shadows constantly changing with each imperceptible descent of the orange sunThe resort
complex of Tranquility Inn had seemingly been cut out of three adjacent rock-strewn hills above an
elongated beach sandwiched between huge natural jetties of coralTwo rows of balconied pink
villas with bright red roofs of terra-cotta extended from each side of the resort?s central hub, a large
circular building of heavy stone and thick glass, all the structures overlooking the water, the villas
connected by a white concrete path bordered by low-cut shrubbery and lined with ground lamps
Waiters in yellow guayabera jackets wheeled room-service tables along the path, delivering bottles
and ice and canap?s to Tranquility?s guests, the majority of whom sat on their individual balconies
savoring the end of the Caribbean dayAnd as the shadows became more prominent, other people
unobtrusively appeared along the beach and on the long dock that extended out over the water
These were neither guests nor service employees; they were armed guards, each dressed in a dark
brown tropical uniform chanel white ceramic watch and?again unobtrusively?with a MAC-10 machine pistol strapped to his
belted waistOn the opposite side of each jacket and hooked to the cloth was a pair of Zeiss Ikon
8x10 binoculars continuously used to scan the darknessThe owner of Tranquility Inn was
determined that it live up to its name
On the large circular balcony of the villa nearest the main building and the attached glassenclosed
dining room, an elderly infirm woman sat in a wheelchair sipping a glass of Chateau

her imperfectly dyed red hair as she listenedShe heard the voice of her man talking with the nurse
inside, then the sound of his less than emphatic footsteps as he walked out to join her
?My God,? she said in French?I?m going to get pissed!?
?Why not?? asked the Jackal?s courier? This is the place for itI see everything through a haze
of disbelief myself
?You still will not tell me why the monseigneur sent you here?us here??
?I told you, I?m merely a messenger
?And I don?t believe youIt?s important for him but of no consequence for us
?You always call me that when you won?t explain
?Then you should learn from experience not to inquire, is it not so??

Isn't that nuts??
My mouth half-opened; I quickly bit down on my lip
Jared leaned forward slowly and took my face between both his hands
?Won't you tell me??
My head shook once, fastI wasn't sure who did itWas it me saying won't or Melanie saying
can't?
His hands tightened under my jawI opened my eyes, and his face was inches away from mine
My heart fluttered, my stomach dropped?I tried to breathe, but my lungs did not obey
I recognized the intention in his eyes; I knew how he would move, exactly how his lips would
feelAnd yet it was so new to me, a first more shocking than any other, as his mouth pressed
against mine
I think he meant just to touch his lips to mine, to be soft, but things changed when our deville watch skin
metHis mouth was abruptly hard and rough, his hands trapped my face to his while his lips
moved mine in urgent, unfamiliar patternsIt was so different from remembering, so much
strongerMy head swam incoherentlyI was no longer in control of it?it was in control of meIt was not
Melanie?the body was stronger than either of us nowOur breathing echoed loudly: mine wild
and gasping, his fierce, almost a snarl
My arms broke free from my controlMy left hand reached for his face, his hair, to wind my
fingers in it
My right hand was faster
Melanie's fist punched his jaw, knocked his face away from mine with a blunt, low soundFlesh
against flesh, hard and angry
The force of it was not enough to move him far, but he scrambled chanel jumbo bag away from me the instant our
lips were no longer connected, gaping with horrorstruck eyes at my horrorstruck expression
I stared down at the still-clenched fist, as repulsed as if I'd found a scorpion growing on the end
of my armA gasp of revulsion choked its way out of my throatI grabbed the right wrist with
my left hand, desperate to keep Melanie from using my body for violence again
I glanced up at JaredHe was staring at the fist I restrained, too, the horror fading, surprise
taking its placeIn that second, his expression was entirely defenselessI could easily read his
thoughts as they moved across his unlocked face
This was not what he had expectedAnd he'd had expectations; that was plain to seeThis had
been buy chanel bags a testA test he'd thought he was prepared to evaluateA test with results he'd anticipated
with confidenceBut he'd been surprised
Did that mean pass or fail?
The pain in my chest was not a surpriseI already knew that a breaking heart was more than an
exaggeration
In a fight-or-flight situation, I never had a choice; it would always be flight for meBecause
Jared was between me and the darkness of the tunnel exit, I wheeled and threw myself into the
box-packed hole
The boxes crunched, crackled, and cracked as my weight shoved them into the wall, into the
floorI wriggled my way into the impossible space, twisting around the heavier squares and
crushing the othersI felt his fingers scrape across my foot as he made a chanel white purses grab for my ankle, and I
kicked one of the more solid boxes between usHe grunted, and despair wrapped choking hands
around my throatI hadn't meant to hurt him again; I hadn't meant to strikeI was only trying to
escape
I didn't hear my own sobbing, loud as it was, until I could go no farther into the crowded hole
and the sound of my thrashing stoppedWhen I did hear myself, heard the ragged, tearing gasps
of agony, I was mortified
So mortified, so humiliatedI was horrified at myself, at the violence I'd allowed to flow
through my body, whether consciously or not, but that was not why I was sobbingI was
sobbing because it had been a test, and, stupid, stupid, stupid, emotional creature that I was, I
wanted it to be gucci g watch r

?You are to come with usHe does not leave Le Coeur du Soldat
?Why do I find that not to my liking??
?There?s no reason for such feelingsHe has peace in his heart
?What about his knife??
?He has no knife, no weaponHe never carries either
?That?s nice to hear
?He has no need for such weapons,? added the messenger, disquietingly
He was escorted down the alley, past the neon-lit entrance, to a barely negotiable break in the
buildingsOne by one, Jason between the two, men, they made their way to the rear of the caf?,
where there was just about the last thing Bourne expected to see in this run-down section of the
citywell, an English gardenA plot of ground perhaps thirty feet in length, twenty in
depth, and trellises supporting a chanel jewelry necklace variety of flowering vines, a barrage of color in the French
moonlight
?That?s quite a sight,? commented Jason? It didn?t come about through neglect

?Ah, it is a passion with Santos! No one understands it, but no one touches a single flower,
either
Bourne was led to a small outside elevator whose steel frame was attached to the stone wall of
the buildingThere was no other access in sightThe conveyance barely held the three of them, and
once the iron gate was closed, the silent messenger pressed a button in the darkness and spoke? We
are here, Santos

?He knows everything is all rightIf not, my friend might have said ?lily? or ?rose ?
?What would happen then??
?You don?t want chanel classic handbags to think about itI don?t care to think about it
The outside elevator stopped with a disturbing double jerk, and the quiet messenger opened a
thick steel door that required his full weight to openBourne was led into the familiar room with
the tasteful, expensive furniture, the bookcases and the single floor lamp that illuminated Santos in
his outsized armchair? You may leave, my friends,? said the large man, addressing the messengers

?You did forget, chanel handbag 2.55 didn?t you?? Santos grinned
?I?ve had other things on my mind
?Yes, sir! Yes, Santos!? The two messengers, instead of heading for the back of the room and
the elevator, opened a door in the left wall and disappearedBourne looked after them, bewildered
?There is a staircase leading to our kitchen, such as it is,? said Santos, answering Jason?s
unspoken question? The door can be opened from this side, not from the steps below except by meSit down, Monsieur SimonHow is your head??
?The swelling?s gone down, thank you Bourne sat on the large couch, sinking into the pillows;
it was not an authoritative position, nor was it not meant to be?I understand you have peace in

?And a desire for three million francs in the avaricious section chanel handbags collection of that heart
?Then you were satisfied with your call to London??

?That?s what I tried to tell you
?Your word is acceptedNow, let me recapitulate your request, your demand, as it were??
?My restrictions,? interrupted Jason
?Very well, your restrictions,? agreed Santos? You and you alone must reach the blackbird,

?It?s an absolute
?Again, I must ask why??

Carlos had two reasons?revenge and the fact that he believes
Bourne could identify him; the Medusans because Bourne had pieced together so much about
them??
?That was the premise, yes,? agreed Conklin, nodding? It?s why I dug around and made those
phone calls, never expecting to find what I didJesus, a global cartel born twenty years ago in
Saigon, peopled by some of the biggest fish in and out of the government and the militaryIt was
the kind of pay dirt I didn?t want and wasn?t looking forI thought I might dig up maybe ten or
twelve hotshot millionaires with post-Saigon bank accounts that couldn?t bear scrutiny, but not this,
not this Medusa
?To put it as simply as possible,? continued Holland, frowning, his eyes again straying down to
the papers in front of him, then up at Alex?Once the connection was made between Medusa and
Carlos, word would be passed to the Jackal that louis vuitton mahina there was a man Medusa wanted eliminated, and
cost was no objectSo far, yes??
?The key here was the caliber and the status of those reaching Carlos,? explained Conklin
?They had to be as close to bona fide Olympians as we could find, the kind of clients the Jackal
doesn?t get and never got
?Then the name of the target is revealed?say, in a way such as ?John Smith, once known years
ago as Jason Bourne??and the Jackal is hookedBourne, the one man he wants dead above all
othersThat?s why the Medusans reaching Carlos had to be so solid, so above questioning that
Carlos accepts them and dismisses any sort of a trap
?Because,? added the CIA?s director, ?Jason Bourne came out of Saigon?s Medusa?a fact
known to Carlos?but he never shared in the riches of the later, postwar MedusaThat?s the
background scenario, isn?t it??
?The logic?s as clean as it can beFor three years he was used and damn chanel purse white near killed in a black
operation, and along the way he supposedly discovered that more than a few undistinguished

nothing of Barabbas
?It?s a terrific libretto,? allowed Holland, a slow smile breaking across his face?I can hear the
tenors soaring in triumph and the Machiavellian bassos slinking offstage in defeatDon?t scowl
at me, Alex, I mean it! It?s really ingeniousIt?s so inevitable it became a self-fulfilling prophecy
?What the hell are you talking about??
?Your Bourne was right from the beginningIt all took place the way he saw it, but not in any
way he could have imaginedBecause it was inevitable; somewhere there had to be a crosspollinator
?Please come down from Mars and explain to an cambon chanel earthling, Peter
?Medusa?s using the Jackal! NowTeagarten?s assassination proves it unless you want to

?Then Carlos?s name had to surface for someone in Medusa who already knew about Jason

Atkinson in London, did you??
?Again, of course notThe time wasn?t right; we weren?t ready to pull those triggers
?Who?s left?? asked Holland
Alex stared at the DCI?Good Lord,? he said softly?DeSole??

I heard Kathy calling my name behind me as I ran into the road
I didn't live far from the Comforter's office, but the darkness in the street disoriented meI'd
gone two blocks before I realized I was running in the wrong direction
People were looking at meI wasn't dressed for exercise, and I wasn't jogging, I was fleeing
But no one bothered me; they politely averted their eyesThey would guess that I was new to
this hostActing out the way a child would
I slowed to a walk, turning north so that I could loop around without passing Kathy's office
again
My walk was only slightly slower than a runI chanel jumbo heard my feet hitting the sidewalk too quickly,
as though they were trying to match the tempo of a dance songlap, slap, slap against the
concreteNo, it wasn't like a drumbeat, it was too angry
Someone hitting someone elseI shuddered away from the horrible image
I could see the lamp on over my apartment doorIt hadn't taken me long to cover the distanceI
didn't cross the road, thoughI remembered what it felt like to vomit, though I never hadThe cold wetness dewed
on my forehead, the hollow sound rang in my earsI was pretty sure I was about to have that
experience for my own
There was a bank of chanel white watches grass beside the walkAround a streetlamp there was a well-trimmed
hedgeI had no time to look for a better placeI stumbled to the light and caught the post to
hold myself upThe nausea was making me dizzy
Yes, I was definitely going to experience throwing up
?Wanderer, is that you? Wanderer, are you ill??
The vaguely familiar voice was impossible to concentrate onBut it made things worse,
knowing I had an audience as I leaned my face close to the bush and violently choked up my
most recent meal
?Who's your Healer here?? the voice askedIt sounded far away through the buzzing in my
earsA hand dolce purse touched my arched back?Do you need an ambulance??
I coughed twice and shook my headI was sure it was over; my stomach was empty
?I'm not ill,? I said I as pulled myself upright using the lamppost for supportI looked over to
see who was watching my moment of disgrace
The Seeker from Chicago had her cell phone in her hand, trying to decide which authority to
callI took one good look at her and bent over the leaves againEmpty stomach or no, she was
the last person I needed to see right now
But, as my stomach heaved uselessly, I realized that there would be a reason for her presence
Oh, no! Oh, no gucci men bag no no no no no!
?Why?? I gasped, panic and sickness stealing the volume from my voice? Why are you here?
What's happened?? The Comforter's very uncomforting words pounded in my head
I stared at the hands gripping the collar of the Seeker's black suit for two seconds before I
realized they were mine
?Stop!? she said, and there was outrage on her face
My hands jerked open and landed against my face?Excuse me!? I huffedI don't
know what I was doing
The Seeker scowled at me and smoothed the front of her outfit? You're not well, and I suppose
I startled you
?I wasn't expecting to see you,? I gucci men wallet whisper

Rather than running up the path from here to the
guards at Villa Twenty and demanding emergency assistance for your ill wife, I will say I was
returning from the front desk where I was complaining about the telephone and saw a fire in Villa
Fourteen, three away from oursThere?ll no doubt be a great deal of confusion, what with the storm
and everyone yelling and calling for helpThat will be your signalUse the confusion; get through
and take out whoever remains at the woman?s villa?make sure your silencer is secureThen go
inside and do the work you have sworn to do
?So I wait for the fire, for the guards and for you to return to Number ElevenStay on the porch with the door closed, of course
?It may take me five minutes or perhaps even twenty, but stay thereMay I ask, madame?or perhaps mademoiselle, although I see no evidence??
?What is it??
?It will take you five or twenty minutes to do what??
?You?re a fool, old man
The nurse pulled her raincoat around her, looped the belt and walked to the front door of the
villa?Get your equipment together and be out here in three minutes,? she commanded The door swung back with bolsas prada the wind as the woman opened it; she went outside into
the torrential rain, pulling it shut behind herAstonished and confused, the old Frenchman stood
motionless, trying to make sense out of the inexplicableThings were happening too fast for him,
blurred in the agony of his woman?s deathThere was no time to mourn, no time to feelOnly
think and think quicklyRevelation came hard upon revelation, leaving unanswered questions that
had to be answered so the whole could be understood?so that Montserrat itself made sense!
The nurse was more than a conduit for instructions from Argenteuil; the angel of mercy was
herself an angel of death, a killer in her own rightSo why was he sent thousands of miles to do the
work another could do just as well and without the elaborate charade of his auspicious arrival? An
old hero of France, indeed it was all so unnecessaryAnd speaking of age, there was another?
another old man who was no killer at allPerhaps, thought the false Jean Pierre Fontaine, he had
made a terrible mistakePerhaps, instead of coming to kill him, the other ?old man? had come to
warn him!
Robert Ludlum ?? THE BOURNE fairy bag prada ULTIMATUM

?Mon Dieu,? whispered the Frenchman? The old men of Paris, the Jackal?s army! Too many
questions!? Fontaine walked rapidly to the nurse?s bedroom door and opened itWith the swiftness
developed over a lifetime of practice, impaired only slightly by his years, he began methodically to
tear apart the woman?s room?suitcase, closet, clothes, pillows, mattress, bureau, dressing table,
writing desk A locked drawer in the desk?a locked drawer in the outer room Nothing mattered now! His woman was gone and there were too many questions!
A heavy lamp on the desk with a thick brass base?he picked it up, pulling out the cord, and
smashed it into the drawerAgain and again and again until the wood splintered, shattering the
recess that held the tiny vertical latchHe yanked the drawer open and stared in equal parts of
horror and comprehension at what he saw
Next to each other in a cushioned plastic case were two hypodermic needles, their vials filled
with an identical yellowish serumHe did not have to know the chemical compounds; there were
too many beyond his knowledge that would be effectiveLiquid death in the vintage gucci handbags veins
Nor did he have to be told for whom they were intendedC?te ? c?te dans le litTwo bodies
beside each other in bedHe and his woman in a pact of final deliveranceHow thoroughly had the
monseigneur thought everything out! Himself dead! One dead old man from the Jackal?s army of
old men had outwitted all the security procedures, killing and mutilating those dearest to Carlos?s
ultimate enemy, Jason BourneAnd, naturally, behind that brilliant manipulation was the Jackal
himself
Ce n?est pas le contrat! Myself, yes, but not my woman! You promised me!
The nurseThe angel not of mercy but of death! The man known on Tranquility Isle as Jean
Pierre Fontaine walked as fast as he could into the other room
The huge silver racing craft with its two enormous engines crashed through the swells as often
above the waves as in themOn the short low bridge, John StJacques maneuvered the drug boat
through the dangerous reefs he knew by summoned memory, aided by the powerful searchlight that
lit up the turbulent waters, now twenty, now two hundred feet in front of the bowHe kept
screaming into his radio, the microphone weaving in front of classic chanel quilted bag his drenched face, hoping against all
logic to raise someone on Tranquility
He was within three miles of the island, a shrubbed volcanic intrusion on the water his

and if one knew the shoals, not much longer to reach in a drug boat than in a seaplane, which had to

was not sure why these calculations kept interfering with his concentration except that somehow
they made him feel better, that he was doing the best he could? Damn it! Why was it always the
best he could do rather than simply the best? He couldn?t louse up anymore, not now, not tonight!
Christ, he owed everything to Mare and David! Maybe even more to the crazy bastard who was his
brother-in-law than to his own sisterDavid, wild-nuts David, a man he sometimes wondered if
Marie ever knew existed!

Why did they keep her?Mel snarledhy didn't they kill her right away? Or kill her slow?I don't

Fear fluttered in my stomachThe Seeker was alive; the Seeker was here
I shouldn't have been afraid of her
Of course, it made sense to be afraid that her disappearance would bring the other Seekers

Jeb had thought I might want to talk to her
Now that I was back, she was condemned to die within hours whether I spoke to her or not

Melanie twisted uneasily, trying to escape the torment in my head
Wanda? They're just going to shoot her

He?s in no condition to threaten a driver or steal an automobileBesides, he reached the
Nemchinovka road quickly; that the car was even seen is pure chanceThe road is not well
traveled, which I assume he also knows
?Let?s get out of here!? cried Conklin, annoyed by both Jason?s attention and his own infirmity
He stood up, wavered, angrily rejected Krupkin?s hand, and started for the door?We can talk in
the car
?Moray, come in, please,? said Krupkin in Russian, sitting beside the assault squad driver in the
front seat, the microphone at his lips, his hand on the frequency dial of the vehicle?s radio?Moray,
respond, if I?m reaching miu miu clutch you
?What the hell?s he talking about?? asked Bourne, in the backseat with Alex
?He?s trying to make contact with the unmarked KGB patrol following CarlosHe keeps
switching from one ultrahigh frequency to another
?The what??
?It?s an eel, Jason,? replied Krupkin, glancing over the seat?Of the Muraenidae family with
pore-like gills and capable of descending to great depthsCertain species can be quite deadly
?Thank you, Peter Lorre,? said Bourne
?Very good,? laughed the KGB man?But you?ll admit it?s aptly descriptiveVery few radios
can either send it or receive it
?When did you steal it from us??
?Oh, not you, not you at allFrom the British, kelly hermes bags truthfullyAs usual, London is very quiet about
these things, but they?re far ahead of you and the Japanese in certain areasIt?s that damned MISix
They dine in their clubs in Knightsbridge, smoke their odious pipes, play the innocents, and
send us defectors trained at the Old Vic
?They?ve had their gaps,? said Conklin defensively
?More so in their high-dudgeon revelations than in reality, AlekseiYou?ve been away too long
We?ve both lost more than they have in that department, but they can cope with public
embarrassment?we haven?t learned that time-honored traitWe bury our ?gaps,? as you put it; we
try too hard for that respectability which too cartier watches often eludes usThen, I suppose, we?re historically
young by comparison Krupkin again switched back into Russian?Moray, come in, please! I?m
reaching the end of the spectrumWhere are you, Moray??
?Stop there, comrade!? came the metallic voice over the loudspeakerCan
you hear me??
?You sound like a castrato but I can hear you
?This must be Comrade Krupkin??
?Were you expecting the pope? Who?s this??
?Orlov
?Good! You know what you?re doing
?I hope you do, Dimitri
?Why do you say that??
Robert Ludlum ?? THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM

?Your insufferable orders to do nothing, that?s whyWe?re two kilometers away from the
building?I drove up black chanel tote through the grass on a small hill?and we have the vehicle in sightIt?s
parked in the lot and the suspect?s inside
?What building? What hill? You tell me nothing
?The Kubinka Armory
Hearing this, Conklin bolted forward in the seat?Oh, my God!? he cried
?What is it?? asked Bourne
?He reached an armory Alex saw the frown of confusion on Jason?s face?Over here armories
are a hell of a lot more than enclosed parade grounds for legionnaires and reservistsThey?re
serious training quarters and warehouses for weapons
?He wasn?t heading for Odintsovo,? broke in Krupkin? The armory?s farther south, on the
outskirts of the town, another four or five rolex watches for women kilomet

Kyle was working on widening the small crevice that had been Walter's sleeping space so that
it would be ready when the desert was dry againIt really wasn't big enough for more than one,
and Kyle would not be staying there alone
At night in the game room, Sunny slept curled into a ball against Kyle's chest, like a kitten who
was friends with a big dog?a rottweiler whom she trusted implicitlySunny wasalways with
KyleI couldn't remember ever seeing them unattached since I'd opened these silver gray eyes
for the first time
Kyle seemed constantly bemused, too distracted by this impossible relationship he couldn't
quite wrap his head around to pay attention to much elseHe wasn't giving up on Jodi, but as
Sunny clung to him, he held her to his side with gentle hands
Before the rain, every space was taken, so I stayed with Doc in the hospital that no longer
frightened meThe cots were not comfortable, but it was a very quilted white bag interesting place to beCandy

miracles now
After the rain, Doc would not be sleeping in the hospital anymoreThe first night in the game
room, Sharon had dragged her mattress right next to Doc's without a word of explanation
Perhaps it was Doc's fascination with the Healer that motivated Sharon, though I doubted Doc
had even noticed how pretty the older woman was; his fascination was with her phenomenal
knowledgeOr maybe it was just that Sharon was ready to forgive and forgetI hoped that was
the caseIt would be nice to think that even Sharon and Maggie might be softened over time
I would not stay in the hospital anymore, either
The crucial conversation with Ian might never have taken place if not for JamieMy mouth

What if those feelings in the saddle christian dior hospital, those few perfect moments of certainty right after I'd
awoken in this body, had been illusion? What if I remembered them wrong? I knew that nothing
had changed for me, but how could I be certain Ian felt the same? The body he'd fallen in love
with was still right here!
I expected him to be unsettled?we all wereIf it was difficult for me, a soul used to such

I was working to put the last of the jealousy and the perplexing echoes of the love I still felt for
Jared behind meI didn't need or want themIan was the right partner for meBut sometimes I
would catch myself staring at Jared and feel confusedI'd seen Melanie touch Ian's arm or hand
and then jerk away as if she'd suddenly remembered who she wasEven Jared, who had the least
reason for uncertainty, would occasionally meet my confused gaze with a searching one of his

We were together nearly as much as Kyle and SunnyIan constantly touched my face and hair,
was always holding my handsBut who did not respond to this body that way? And wasn't it
platonic for everyone else? Why didn't he kiss me again, the way he had that first day?
Maybe he could never love me inside this body, as appealing as it seemed to be to all the other
humans here
That worry was heavy in my heart the night Ian had carried my cot?because it was too heavy
for me?to the big, dark game room
It was raining for the first time in more than six monthsThere were both laughter and
complaints as people shook out their damp bedding and arranged their placesI saw Sharon with
Doc and smiled
?Over here, Wanda,? Jamie called, waving me toward where he'd just set his mattress next to
Ian's?There's room for all three of us now
Jamie was the one person who treated me almost exactly the same as beforeHe did make
allowances for my balenciaga twiggy puny physique, but he never seemed surprised to see me enter a room or
shocked when Wanderer's words came through these lips
?You don't really want that cot, do you, Wanda? I'll bet we could all fit okay on the mattresses
if we shoved them together Jamie grinned at me while he kicked one mattress into the other
without waiting for agreement? You don't take up much space
He took the cot from Ian and set it on its side, out of the wayThen Jamie stretched out on the
very edge of the far mattress and turned his back to us
?Oh, hey, Ian,? he added without turning?I talked to Brandt and Aaron, and I think I'm going
to move in with them
I stared at Jamie's unmoving form for a long momentIan was just as motionlessHe couldn't
