Gay films
Katoey (transsexual/transvestite) or gays are often featured as comic relief or villains in mainstream Thai films, but there have been a number of films that make gays and kratoey the main characters. Transvestites and gays are also known as "tdoot", a term inappropriately borrowed from the film "Tootsie" with Dustin Hoffman.
One of the first was Youngyooth Thongkonthun's Iron Ladies, or Satree lek, based on a true story about a transsexual/transvestite gay men's volleyball team that won a national championship in 1996. It was a huge hit on the international festival circuit. The 2000 comedy spawned a sequel in 2003, Satree Lek 2.
More loosely based on a true incident was the 2002 film Saving Private Tootsie, which tells the story of a group of gay and kathoey entertainers who are lost in rebel-held jungle territory after their plane crashes . A squad from the Thai army, led by a gruff, homophobic sergeant played by veteran actor Sorapong Chatree, goes to the rescue.
And the life of transgendered Muay Thai champion Parinya Kiatbusaba (or Nong Tum) is related in 2003's Beautiful Boxer, directed by Ekachai Uekorngtham. Unlike The Iron Ladies, Beautiful Boxer was less comedic in tone.
The 2003 film Tropical Malady, directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, depicts a romance between a Thai army soldier and a local small-town boy. The narrative of the film then abruptly shifts in the middle to relate a folk tale about a tiger shaman, with the soldier alone in the jungle, haunted by the tiger-shaman's spirit. The film won a jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Apichatpong also co-directed the low-budget digital movie, The Adventure of Iron Pussy, with artist Michael Shaowanasai, who portrays a transvestite secret agent. A musical, the movie also was an homage and a parody of the Thai films of the 1960s and '70s, with Shaowansai basing his character on the actress Petchara Chaowarat.
In 2005, Thai film Rainbow Boys, depicting a contemporary gay relationship, saw a limited-release screening. And in 2006 there was The Last Song, a remake of a 1985 Thai film about a transsexual cabaret dancer and her struggle to find acceptance and true love.
Me ... Myself (Thai: ¢ÍãËéÃÑ¡¨§à¨ÃÔ or Kaw hai rak jong jaroen) is a 2007 Thai romantic drama film written and directed by actor-singer Pongpat Wachirabunjong. In the film, Ananda Everingham stars as a male dancer in a transvestite cabaret who must must re-find himself after being struck by a car and suffering from amnesia.

Gay life in the country.
Thailand is said to have one of the most freedom and openly gay societies in the world, however 'coming out' in families is not common. The pressure to marry is much less than in Caucasian, Indian or Islamic societies.
Thailand has annual gay pride events in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket. The health authorities work together with the gay community to promote HIV education and prevention. Gay and transvestite actors also play key roles in Thai movies and soap operas.
Between 2002 and 2007 many lesbian bars and clubs have opened in Bangkok, previously there were only lesbian parties or special events. The recent coup d'ètat has not affected the gay scene at all
There are no laws against gays or lesbians in Thailand. However, there are some Buddhist laws that prohibit openly gay men to enter monkhood. Transsexuals (known as Kathoey) are imbued in Thai culture via television, and cabaret shows, such as the Alcazar Theatre in Pattaya.

Inspired by Singapore¡¯s MM Lee Kuan Yew¡¯s recent reference to a magazine article about the English university having openly acknowledged gay love for almost 400 years which influenced the statesman¡¯s views that Singapore has ¡°no option¡± but to decriminalise gay sex, columnist Dr Tan Chong Kee finds proof of same sex love being recorded throughout 2,000 years of Chinese history. Part 1 of 2.
In a recent interview which made headlines locally and internationally, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore talked about there being ¡°no option¡± for Singapore but to be part of the world and decriminalise gay sex. He made reference to how an article on homosexuality in the recent issue of CAM, the Cambridge Alumni Magazine, had influenced him in arriving at this conclusion. That article led with the blurb: ¡°Civil partnerships between same-sex couples have been on the British statute book for fifteen months. But in Cambridge, discovers Graeme Grant, gay love has been openly acknowledged for almost 400 years.¡±
If an English university being in the lead for 400 years openly acknowledging gay love is good reason for an Asian country like Singapore to reconsider its criminalisation of homosexuality, what about 2,000 years of Chinese history where gay love is not only openly acknowledged, but celebrated? Modern homophobia has often censored this important chapter of Chinese history and culture.
Fridae columnist Tan Chong Kee, who holds a Ph.D. in Chinese Literature from Stanford University in the United States, takes readers through the history of same-sex love in China from The Warring States to the Ming and Qing Dynasties during which the country allowed European Christian missionaries to enter and became exposed to European influences and power. Part 1 of 2.

The Warring States (841 B.C. ¨C 221 B.C.) Õ½¹ú
Writing during this period, the philosopher Mo Tzu (Ä«×Ó) discusses at length his misgivings about the rulers of his time. He admonishes these rulers for using their relatives and ¡°handsome men¡± as court officials, leading to the mismanagement of the state. (1) It is important to note that he is not talking about one specific ruler but makes a general statement about ¡°the kings and lords of today¡±. Mo Tzu is not against same-sex love just as he is not against family ties. What he objects to is the practice of nepotism and favoritism, which, he notes, is widespread. Through Mo Tzu, we have a glimpse of how prevalent same-sex love was among the Chinese rulers, as early as 841 ¨C 221 B.C.
To illustrate, let us look at the history of the state of Yu (ÓÝ). Many might have heard the story of Xi Shi (Î÷Ê©), one of the most beautiful women in Chinese history, which the King of Yue (Ô½) used to distract the King of Wu (…Ç), paving the way to the eventual conquest of Wu. During this same historical period, the lord of Jing (½ú) wanted to invade Yu (ÓÝ) but the lord of Yu had a wise counsel helping him to thwart Jing¡¯s plans. So the lord of Jing gave the lord of Yu a present of a beautiful man. The lord of Yu became so enamored with this beautiful man that he refused to listen to his counsel. Seizing this opportunity, Jing invaded and annexed Yu. (2)
The important lesson to draw from this story is that the lord of Yu¡¯s love for beautiful men was generally known in the ¡°international circle¡± of the time. There was no need to hide because there was stigma. Furthermore, it was diplomatically appropriate to present the ruler of another state with either a male of female concubine. Not only does this story illustrate what Mo Tzu says, it also underscores the fact that since the earliest days of Chinese civilisation, the love for men was a common feature of the ruling elites.
Han Dynasty (206 BC ¨C 220 AD) ºº³¯
Sima Qian wrote the first dynastic history in the Han Dynasty and his work sets the format which all subsequent official histories were written. It is very revealing that Sima Qian reserved a special chapter to document the history of the Han emperors¡¯ male lovers, and thanks to this precedent, we have inherited a rich official history of imperial male love throughout Chinese history.
Of the 25 emperors of Han, 10 of them are well known to have male lovers. Of these love affairs, the one between Emperor Ai and a beautiful ephebe, Dong Xian, was so deep that it became the reference for male same-sex love for thousands of years. Even today, among literary circle, male homosexuality is referred to as the ¡°passion of the cut sleeve¡± . For more than 2,000 years same-sex love between men in China had as one of their archetypes this love affair of Emperor Ai, an older high status man, with Dong Xian, a beautiful younger man, rather similar to the form same-sex love took in ancient Greece.
Another archetype of Chinese male love can be found in the love affair between Han Wudi and Han Yan . Han Wudi is one of the greatest emperors of China. He became emperor at the age of 16 and ruled until his death at age 70. Under his reign, China became the most powerful kingdom in the ancient world, and because of him, Chinese people to this day refer to themselves as the Han people. Just to list some of his achievement, Han Wudi declared January as the beginning of the year and this decision is still in effect to this day (before that, Chinese New Year was celebrated at different months of the year ¨C similar to how Vietnamese and Malay New Years in our present time fall on different dates). He also created an imperial examination system to select able scholars as mandarins, setting in motion the system of imperial examinations that governed China for the next 2,000 years. With his military might and diplomatic skills, he established the Silk Route, ensuring commerce and cultural exchange between East and West for centuries to come. He united all the currencies of the Warring States and created the first centralised imperial mint. Every single one of these achievements has profoundly affected the world.
And this most admired emperor in all Chinese history was in love with another man. Han Wudi met Han Yan when they were both young princes. Yan was the grandson of the King of Han Wudi and Yan studied together and grew to love each other. Yan was no pretty boy. According to Sima Qian, Yan was ¡°eight feet and five inches tall¡±, translated into modern height measurement, it would be about 1.8 to 2 meters, which makes him a towering figure in the ancient world where people were much shorter than we are today. Yan is also skilled in equestrian and archery, and familiar with the battle tactics of the Northern huntsmen. That made Han Wudi loved him even more since he wanted to declare war on these people to secure his Northern borders. Yan was the only man (as opposed to eunuchs) allowed to freely come and go in the imperial palace and spent many a nights in the imperial bed.
Unfortunately Yan let his position in court go to his head. One day, during an imperial hunting expedition, Han Wudi asked Yan to first go ahead. Han Wudi¡¯s brother, the King of Jiangdu saw the imperial carriage from afar and thought it was the emperor, so he got off his horse and knelt by the road side to greet him. Yan did not even stop to acknowledge the King of Jiangdu. When the King realized it wasn¡¯t his brother in the carriage, he was infuriated with the snub from someone of a lower rank. He told their mother about the incident and the old Empress bore a grudge against Yan. When she eventually got hold of evidence that Yan was also sleeping with the emperor¡¯s female concubines, she ordered his death. Han Wudi pleaded with his mother to rescind the order but she refused. We are not witnessing sexual prudishness here. Sleeping with the emperor¡¯s female concubine is a very serious offence because it throws into question the imperial lineage. If one cannot be sure whether a son born to a female concubine is really the emperor¡¯s son, how can the next emperor be chosen? Yan¡¯s infraction hits at the foundation of dynastic rule, no wonder the old Empress knew she could use that to put the emperor¡¯s favorite male lover to death. But it is also the most telling sign of how much Wudid loved Yan ¨C in the face of his own imperial lineage being thrown into doubt, he pleaded for Yan and was inconsolable at his death. It was as if he did not care whether it was his son or Yan¡¯s son who will succeed him as emperor. In fact, after Yan¡¯s death, Wudi asked Yan¡¯s brother, who looked very much like Yan, to be his next male companion.
The love story between Han Wudi and Han Yan was well-known among Chinese literati through out Chinese history and can be considered another archetype of Chinese male love: one between two equally masculine and martial men. We can see echoes of this archetype in the Ming dynasty novel ¡°The Water Margin¡± where bandits and swordsmen formed a tightly knit brotherhood that placed the love between each other high above their love for their wives.

Straight or gay — the distinction isn't made in Thailand as it is in the U.S. In this largely Buddhist country, sex and sexuality come without the guilt and other baggage that accompany them here. Many Thais engage in sex with both men and women, without worrying about how to label themselves.
Thailand does have a gay culture, but much of it has been created by westerners. As a visitor, looking for nightlife, for gay sex, or for gay friends, this is largely the culture you'll most readily find. Here you'll meet outgoing and friendly Asian men who are interested in meeting westerners.
This can give the impression that most Thai men who we'd think of as gay are looking for westerners. That's not the case. But those you meet will often be interested in meeting Americans.
Thai culture does not place a premium on youth in the way that western societies do. If you're over 35, you probably feel over the hill in the U.S. You can still be quite desirable in Thailand. This comes as a pleasant surprise to middle-aged and older gay Americans!
Until quite recently, the visible, public gay establishments in Thailand were virtually all commercial: bars, go-go clubs, saunas, and massage parlors. These still account for the majority of gay spots, and you won't really have seen gay Thailand until you visit a go-go boy bar. But the largest cities now have a few discos, bars, or coffeehouses that lend themselves to non-commercial encounters, as well. The largest cities have gay karaoke bars and other establishments just for local gays. The best way to find them is to ask some locals.
Public discretion
"In America, you can say anything but you can't do it. In Thailand, you can do anything but you can't talk about it," noted one observer.
What two adults do in private is their own business in Thailand. Public displays of sexual affection, however, are considered highly inappropriate. Kissing in public is frowned upon.
This isn't an anti-gay prejudice: Heterosexual kissing is also unacceptable. In fact, it's amusing for American visitors to see two Thai men walking down the street arm-in-arm, when heterosexual Thai couples never do so. What's going on? The two men are non-sexual friends, and thus aren't crossing the line.
If you're seen walking arm-in-arm with a Thai boyfriend, people can figure out what's going on. Your boyfriend may not mind, so if he takes the initiative in this direction, go right ahead. It's better for you not to initiate any public displays, however: You could put him in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between either offending you, or acting in a way he feels in inappropriate and embarrassing.
Modesty
Public discretion continues briefly in the bedroom. "I came out of the bathroom, and my date was already under the sheets," recalls Mike, a gay American visitor to Bangkok. "I peeled off my shorts, got in with Chai — and discovered he was still wearing his t-shirt and underwear! I thought he must have lost interest somewhere along the line."
No — Chai was just being Thai. "A few kisses, a little cuddling, and that underwear was quickly gone. He turned out to be a real acrobat! We were on the floor, on the dresser, in positions I'd only dreamed of. There wasn't an inhibited bone in his body!"
Public nudity is verboten in Thailand. The country's few nude beaches are created, and largely populated, by Westerners. Even in the same-sex locker room at a gym, men often change clothes under a towel, and shower in private.
If you bring home a date, you may not see him naked before he gets under the sheets. But once things get started, anything can happen.
Well, perhaps not anything. Few Thai men are interested in S/M, B/D, water sports, or much of anything beyond vanilla sex. Many are interested in being only a top, or only a bottom. If you're versatile, you're pretty sure of having a fun and uninhibited time. If you have specialized interests or expectations, discuss them in advance to avoid disappointment all around.
Katoeys
Cross-dressing is far more accepted, and publicly widespread, in Thailand than in any other country. Males who cross-dress are referred to as katoeys, or ladyboys. Drag shows are popular at gay clubs, and also in many establishments catering largely to a straight clientele.
For Thais themselves
While Thais do not, by and large, make moral judgments about being gay, there remains a strong pressure to marry and have a family. Since they aren't into labeling themselves, it's common for Thai men to have predominantly same-sex relationships while in their twenties, then to marry and have kids, without feeling like they've switched from gay to straight.
An increasing number of Thai men do identify as gay. Frequently, just as in the U.S., they'll leave their hometown to get breathing room. Those in the plains and hills of the north and northeast generally move to Bangkok or Chiang-Mai. Those in Bangkok may go abroad for a few years.
Safety
Theft is rare, violence even rarer. But of course, there are no guarantees in life. It's always wise to keep valuables in the hotel safe when traveling, and not to tempt fate. Someone who came home with you only for love might reconsider if he sees a wallet on the dresser with the equivalent of a month of his wages — and realizes that to you, it's little more than enough for a night on the town.
The bars know who they hire, so taking home a bar boy creates an extra element of protection. In addition, it's common for hotels to request the ID's of overnight visitors, and your guests should be ready for this.

One of the globe's most notorious go-go districts … and a population too shy to kiss in public. A society uncommonly open to same-sex relationships … yet no visible gay community. These juxtapositions make Thailand a fascinating destination for the gay traveler. It's also a cheap destination. A simple but comfortable hotel room will run you $25; a good dinner, $10.
Thailand is 90% Buddhist. This kinder and gentler philosophy-religion yields an outlook on sexuality entirely different from our own. Publicly, Thais are extremely modest. Nude or topless beaches, for example, are unknown except for a few isolated stretches created by Westerners. Kissing in public is perceived as a brazen flaunting of sexuality. So is holding hands with someone of the opposite sex. Two men can walk arm-in-arm, however, and be seen as "just friends".
Thai modesty extends to the bedroom. If a Thai man escorts you back to your hotel room, don't be surprised when he keeps a towel securely around his waist until he's between the sheets. Yet when it comes to sex, Thai culture takes a none-of-anyone's-business attitude that, were it to take root in the U.S., would land Ken Starr right in the unemployment lines. One observer summarized it all with the oft-quoted remark that "in Thailand, you can do anything, but you can't talk about it. In the West, you can say anything but you can't do it."
Thailand does have a gay culture, but it's largely centered around bars, saunas, and numerous go-go clubs. These are easily found in gay guidebooks. They also advertise in the mainstream tourist guides distributed by Thai hotels; these listings are more likely to be up-to-date. Elaborate drag shows are a popular form of entertainment for audiences but don't fall into the "gay" category; the audiences at the biggest shows are mostly straight.

How do you explore a country where most inhabitants speak no English, and you aren't likely to learn their language? There's no reason an intrepid traveler can't enjoy Thailand independently. Hotels are easy to reserve by fax or email. Plenty of restaurants have English-language menus. Your biggest headache will be getting around: Be ready for delays caused by the language barrier. Carry a map, and have a sense of where you want to be, but don't plan to communicate with your cab driver by pointing to a spot on a map - most Thais can't read a map.
Instead, hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs hand out cards with their name and address printed in Thai. Hold on to those cards, and perhaps you'll avoid my experience: Asking to go to Adam's Apple, getting an affirmative nod from the tuk-tuk driver that he knew what I wanted; then being delivered to the airport. His English, I discovered too late, went only as far as the first letter of a name.
There's much to be said for a group tour, especially if this is your first trip to Southeast Asia. Most gay tours to Thailand are set up for men whose primary interest is the nightlife, and they advertise widely in the gay press. For those seeking a broader experience, I recommend the company that I traveled with: Asia Transpacific Journeys (1-800-642-2742) which emphasizes a variety of activities and cultural experiences: trekking in the mountainous north, Bangkok sightseeing, sea kayaking, and jungle hikes. Although Asia Transpacific is not a gay company, two of the other twelve people in our tour group were gay, and we felt entirely comfortable with the mix.

Thai tourist officials make much of the country's nickname, "The Land of Smiles." It sounds corny at first: Do we want an entire country of Donny Osmonds? Well, no, not even if they're Buddhist Donny Osmonds. But the ubiquitous smile grew on me. It's infectious - and useful. Did you accidentally offend someone? Smile an apology. They offended you? Just smile; everything will be fine. Want to say "Thank you"? A smile will do. Don't know how to handle an unexpected situation? Well, now you know.

Your visit to Thailand will go more smoothly, and your interactions will be richer, if your preparatory reading includes not only a sightseeing guide, but some broader background. Gulf of Thailand
Koh Samui is one of the most attractive vacation resorts which is not over-crowded. A gay scene is slowly developing and in concentrated at the Chaweng Beach area. There’s no ‘Boyztown’ here. Instead, many gay visitors prefer a more laid-back approach rather than the jaded and seedy scene that can be found elsewhere in Thailand.
Chaweng Beach is the best known beach: Take the very short Sala Koy Rd left off Chaweng Beach Rd as you head south (close to the OTOP shop). The beach here is a popular place for local Thai out for an early evening swim, or relaxing beach dinner bought from vendors. Gay Thai go there about 5pm, often in groups, to right hand side as you reach the beach. Apparently the left hand side as you walk onto the beach 100m or so is quite a scene from 2-6am after all the bars have closed. Take care and remember that beaches are pitch black at night
